During her stay in 1781, Maria Cunegonda van Saksen, the later Princess-Abbess of Thorn and Essen, noticed some deficiencies in the current castle in Thorn and ordered a major renovation.
The renovation includes a new wing as well as new outbuildings, including the new kitchen building with kitchens on the ground floor, and was completed in 1784.
