Stadtlauringen lies with its town center on the Lauer, which rises a few hundred meters west of the Oberlauringen district north of Stadtlauringen and flows into the Franconian Saale near Niederlauer. On its way there, the Lauer flows through a number of other places such as Maßbach, Poppenlauer and Münnerstadt. The districts of Ballingshausen and Altenmünster are already in the Schweinfurter Rhön, and the Ellertshäuser See is in the latter. With an area of 33 hectares, this reservoir is the largest reservoir in Lower Franconia. In the northeast, part of the municipality lies in the Haßberge. This includes the Laubhügel (504 m), the highest elevation in the Schweinfurt district and the second highest in the Haßberge. The Franconian Marienweg runs through Stadtlauringen.
