The museum is scenically located at the Eixendorf reservoir in the Schwarzachtal. As a "special museum of supra-regional importance" it shows the "crafts in the Upper Palatinate" and tries to convey as vivid a picture as possible of the life of the craftsmen around 1900, the transition to mechanization and industrialization. The institution is sponsored by the city of Rötz, supported by a museum association, the Friends of the Oberpfälzer Handwerksmuseum Hillstett e. V. and a working group consisting of members of the Rötz city council, the circle of friends, the cultural department at the Cham district office and other people who care deeply about the museum.
