The Capoliveri mines are located in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, on Monte Calamita (Magnet), which takes its name from magnetite, the iron mineral found in these mines; namely Calamita, Ginevro and a small work Sassi Neri. For centuries they were the largest source of income for the Elban population, especially those from Rio Marina, Rio Elba and Capoliveri.

To discover the fascinating and ancient history of iron and to understand the hard-working journey of the miners, it is possible to take a guided excursion to the Minera del Ginevro and to the Museum of the Old Workshop.
Magnetite is a dense mineral, its specific gravity is 8 times higher than that of water, it is also an iron mineral with the highest iron content and therefore also the most intense.

The Elban iron deposits are among the oldest iron deposits to have been exploited in the world. Since early history, the island has held a strategic position, both in terms of controlling shipping traffic and due to its inexhaustible mineral deposits, which were targeted by the major powers of the Mediterranean.
