A once formidable German coastal battery. Despite the 600 tons of bombs dropped by 124 RAF aircraft on the night of 5/6 June, the four guns were still intact the next morning. At 5:37 am they opened fire. The French cruiser Georges-Leygues was the first to answer the German attack, followed by the Montcalm and the American battleship Arkansas. The battery was not finally silenced until 7 pm by two direct hits from the French cruiser Georges-Leygues. The battery, which stands on a picturesque cliff, had four 150mm guns with a range of 20 km. The observation and command post that stood 300m in front of the bunkers on the edge of the cliff was the scene of one of the most famous scenes from the movie The Longest Day.

Moving experience seeing the guns up close. Bike racks and lockers to store your panniers.
On a lighter note there is a little cafe in a shed which has just opened up to the east of the site called Le Chalet Gourmand which provided welcome refreshment on our cycle ride.

The battery Longues-sur-Mer is the only German coastal battery of the Atlantic Wall with cannons still preserved throughout Normandy.
