    In 1298 a female penitentiary was established in Alt-Malchow, which later served as a Cistercian convent and since 1552 as a female monastery for the Mecklenburg state estates. Of the oldest monastery church, which had five altars and altar backs in the middle of the 16th century, nothing is left today.

    It was completely rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style between 1844 and 1849 under the direction of Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, but fell victim to a fire on St. John's night in 1888, after which only the tower and the walls remained. The church was rebuilt with everything that was still usable from the old church in the years 1888 to 1890 under the direction of the chief building officer Georg Daniels.

    The church is a striking three-aisled brick building that can be seen from the opposite side of the lake. It has tall, narrow, ogival windows with ornamental paintings. There are a number of turret-like attachments on the tower and on the eaves of the ship. This can also be seen nicely on the gable of the ship, which contains a series of ascending and descending turrets with ornate brick panels. This also applies to the side extension.

    The interior of the church is spanned by several ribbed vaults that rest on columns. The interior of the church dates from the time the church was rebuilt and is rather simple. The richly figured altarpiece with the crucifixion group was created by Karl Andreae in 1893.       The first church building dates back to before 1298. This single-aisle church was built from field stones and, despite repeated renovations, could never fully meet the demands of a monastery church due to its small size and simplicity.
      In the course of the centuries, various repairs were necessary, so that the monastery officials campaigned for a new building. The old church building was demolished and a neo-Gothic church was built in its place between 1844 and 1849 based on a design by the court architect Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel (1796-1869). In 1888 a fire ravaged the church and left only the tower and outer walls standing. It was rebuilt between 1888 and 1890 under the secret chief building officer Georg Daniel (1829-1913).
      The monastery church has been owned by the city of Malchow since 1997 and has served as an exhibition space for the Mecklenburg Organ Museum and as a venue for concerts and weddings.The tower of the monastery church can be climbed and offers a wonderful view of the monastery complex and the island town of Malchow over Lake Malchow .

        Malchow Monastery is a former Magdalene convent in Alt Malchow and is located on the south side of Lake Malchow.

        A first convent of the Magdalene nuns, "penitents in the succession of Maria Magdalena", was established before 1274 in Neu Röbel an der Müritz.

        Between May 21 and June 2, 1298, the convent of the Order of the Penitents was moved by Bishop Gottfried I von Bülow from the Havelberg diocese to the Archdeaconate of Waren in the village of Alt Malchow on the southern shore of Lake Malchow.[1] The convent buildings in Röbel were taken over by the Dominicans.

        In 1298, with the consent of his mother Sophia, Nicholas II of Werle transferred the church patronage of Alt- and Neu-Malchow and Lexow to the convent. In the 15th century the convent was considered Cistercian (Wikipedia).

          A very beautiful and impressive church building, well worth a visit. The tower of the monastery church can be climbed and offers a magnificent view of the monastery complex, the island town of Malchow, and Lake Malchow.

          Malchow Monastery is idyllically situated near Lake Malchow. According to tradition, the monastery was founded at its current location in 1298, when nuns from the Order of Penitents moved from Röbel. The monastery complex houses the art museum and the Mecklenburg Organ Museum.

            One sees it from far and has from here a wonderful view of Malchow. It's worth driving down the waterfront to Malchower Straße and back via Klosterstraße. For hikers, the forest next to the church, with the former monastery garden, could be interesting

                    Malchow Monastery is located opposite the town, on the south side of the lake. It was originally a Magdalene monastery, which, after being first founded in Röbel before 1274, became a Cistercian monastery in 1295 and found its permanent location here. Like other convents in Mecklenburg, it was not completely dissolved by the Reformation, but was converted into a Protestant women's convent.

                    The cemetery and Engelscher Garden, a park for strolling, are located close to the monastery. The centerpiece is the church, which also houses the main part of the Mecklenburg Organ Museum. The Mecklenburg Organ Museum is unique in the eastern states. Regular demonstrations provide insight into the world of organ music.

                    The monastery's former refectory also displays works from the estates of artists with a special connection to the town of Malchow, who were born or worked here, such as Rudolf Gahlbeck, Siegmar Dittner, and Friedrich Franz Pingel.
