The Poppenburg is located in the Lower Saxon town of Burgstemmen, above the leash and on the main road 1. Strategically dominated the hill castle in the Middle Ages by their location on a hill above the leash passage traffic on the old Hellweg between Minden and Hildesheim (Hellweg before the Santforde), was an important trade route from the Rhineland to Central Germany in the Middle Ages. At times the river Leine formed the border of the prince bishopric Hildesheim to the diocese Minden and later to the principality Calenberg. The Poppenburg was one of the old royal castles, which protected the Leinetal and thus the way to the city of Hildesheim and the area of the bishopric and prince bishopric Hildesheim. In 1964 the Diakonisches Werke Hildesheim bought the residential wing and the associated property with a courtyard and park.
