If you pass the Steintor Bridge over the moat, i.e. one of two connections from the (old) town island of the Hanseatic City of Havelberg to the cathedral district, you will have an excellent view of the Romanesque/Gothic St. Marien Cathedral, consecrated in 1170, the former seat of the bishops of the diocese (Hochstifts) Havelberg on the Domberg, until secularization in 1571 a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg.

Originally, the (old) district of Havelberg and the cathedral district were connected, the Havel only flowing around the town on a peninsula in a loop. Only when the city moat was laid were the city and cathedral districts separated from one another, which made it easier to defend the bourgeois settlement as an island.
