The museum and its exhibitions have been open to the public since 1986. Farm life in earlier times around the former Reichsburg Boyneburg is shown on 300 square meters of exhibition space. Every year there are changing special exhibitions.

As early as the 14th century, the von Boyneburg family had split into three branches, together they still managed the castle on top of the mountain. In the last third of the 15th century they gave up the castle as their residence and settled in the vicinity. A branch of the Lords of Boyneburg built the so-called "Old Boyneburg Castle" in Wichmannshausen on the north-east edge of the village center near the church. Together with the farm buildings and the garden, it was originally surrounded by a wall as a whole. Above the entrance door of the two-storey manor house is the builder's coat of arms and the year of construction 1757 in a blind gable. Opposite is the former residential building, now a museum (museum-wichmannshausen.de/index.html).
