In the years 1793 and 1794 as well as from 1813 to 1815 the Bergische Land was the scene of two wars against France. The first was the so-called coalition war against the French revolutionary army, the second was the liberation war against Napoleon.

In both wars the Bensberg castle served as a military hospital. Because of the epidemic danger of typhoid fever, the dead were buried here in the forest near the castle.

The mortal remains of 4,000 French are said to be on this site. Many of them did not succumb to their wounds, but to diseases. Many had been on the way back from their emperor's failed campaign in Russia. Shortly thereafter, at the Vienna Congress of 1815, the Rhineland was awarded to the victorious Prussia.

As early as 1794, 3,000 Austrian soldiers died of typhoid fever in Bensberg's Schlosslazarett and were also buried there.

A few meters from the cross, an information board reminds of this time and also because a distinctive French genome lives on in the Cologne language even today.
