This bridge is one of the meeting places along the Demer River marked by a work of art. In this case, beautifully crafted bridge railings and a toll house made of Corten steel were erected on the concrete girder, built in 1986. The carved patterns illuminate at night. The toll house refers to the toll that passersby had to pay to cross the bridge between 1860 and 1900. This bridge was built in 1860 after a meander in the Demer River was straightened. The original wooden bridge was located a little further upstream.
Not far from the bridge, on September 2, 1914, the lifeless body of Father Dergent was found. Father Dergent had been captured by German soldiers a few days earlier while transporting wounded residents of Gelrode by horse and cart to the hospital in Aarschot. In Aarschot, he was imprisoned, mocked, and tortured. He was cowardly shot, and his body was thrown into the Demer River. The body was buried in the dike and could only be exhumed and buried in the Gelrode cemetery on September 14th.
