In the 17th century, a Renaissance palace was built on the cellars of the medieval brewery. The building was later named after the wife of Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony, Magdalena Sybilla. The Magdalenenburg initially served two purposes. The two upper floors housed the court, while the attic and the two basement floors served as a provisions store and wine cellar. From 1725 to 1818, the latter housed Augustus the Strong's giant wine barrel, which held 238,000 liters. This barrel was built in connection with an undocumented competition between the Saxon and Palatine Electors. Augustus the Strong emerged as the winner. However, his wine barrel was demolished in 1818, while the Heidelberg barrel (228,000 liters) can still be viewed today. At the beginning of the 19th century, the building was completely converted into a bomb-proof provisions store. Despite this, the name "Magdalenenburg" has remained to this day.
