The landscape can be described as a gentle low mountain range.
The historical landscape of Transylvania is surrounded by mountains on all sides, like a fortress, so it is itself a Carpathian castle to a certain extent: in the east towards the Moldau lie the Eastern Carpathians in the south towards Wallachia the Transylvanian Alps, in the west as a demarcation to the broad Pannonian lowlands the Transylvanian west mountains, in the north finally the Maramures mountains, which merge into the forest Carpathians.
The highlands within this fort are characterized by hilly landscapes. The few passes between the up to 2500 m high mountain ranges, which make the country accessible, play a central role in cultural history and especially in the history of the fortified churches.
