Schengen is a small, unobtrusive wine village on the Mosel. Nevertheless, it enjoys a great reputation, because after him, the Schengen Agreement is named. On June 14, 1985, on a Mosel ship near Schengen, five EU member states decided to abolish controls at common borders. The European Monument and a piece of the Berlin Wall on the banks of the Moselle are reminiscent of this important agreement.

The Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985 by the five founding countries, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Through agreements, controls at the internal borders of the contracting states could be lifted and a common external border created. This initiated the death of many customs houses and that is a good thing.
