The Fürstenkuhle is a high moor remnant with a central large heath pond surrounded by swamp forest. Typical high moor vegetation has been preserved in places. The forest area is surrounded by extensively used grassland and wet meadows with some artificially created banks, which are frequented by resting and breeding birds. The flora and fauna of the Heideweiher and its surroundings are unique in North Rhine-Westphalia.
