Since the Belgians suffered the heaviest losses in the Velpen area, a military cemetery of 55 ares was constructed in 1915, during WWI. 181 Belgian fallen soldiers rest here, of which 109 lost their lives during the Battle and 31 remained unknown.
Next to the military cemetery is the memorial column of the 4th and 24th Line Regiments. The monument was unveiled in 1939.

Next to the military cemetery, as Katrien points out, there's a memorial column for the 4th and 24th Line Regiments (inscription: Haelen, 12 August 1914, 4th/24th). At the cemetery parking lot (the "ordinary" one) is another monument, "In memory of Messrs. Guillaume Michiels, Jules Severijns, and Antoine Volders," "the young husbands of Bertha De Coster, Theresia Stroobants, and Eugenie Pauwels." All fell "on August 12, 1914." At the back of the cemetery: a cross with the word "Pax" (peace). Note the graves of the unknown soldiers.

The Belgian military dead were buried at the “Military Cemetery in Velpen” on the initiative of the then mayor Cleeremans of Velpen. On 13 August 1915, the residents commemorated the first anniversary of the fighting. This military cemetery was probably expanded further in the post-war years. At the same time, soldiers were repatriated by family members. In 1939, on the occasion of the 25th commemoration of the First World War, the cemetery was laid out in its current form. There are now 181 Belgians buried there, 30 of whom could no longer be identified. The majority died during or as a result of the fighting at Halen.
