The lake is about 1,500 m² in size and now only about 2 meters deep. It was created about 12,000 years ago by a sinkhole, i.e. by the collapse or subsequent breaking of non-water-soluble top layers over a natural cavity in the subsoil and was originally about 35 meters deep.
Myths and legends are entwined around the Prophetensee. For example, those of the soldiers who dumped ammunition in the water in the last days of World War II. Or the fluctuations in the water level, which apparently contradicted the laws of nature: whenever it rained heavily, the water level dropped. In phases of long drought, the Prophetensee carried a lot of water.
