Built in the 12th century by the Collalto family, this castle was used for a long time as a military fortress. Especially during the First World War it was heavily damaged and now remains just beyond the tower and walls.

The first construction of a solid castle, for exclusive military use on the well-protected Collalto hill, dates back to the first half of the 12th century, with the erection of a mighty guard tower. It is the gigantic keep that still stands alone among the ruins of the fortified town, with that sad and chipped face, testimony to the passage of time and lived history.

Castle of Collalto di Susegana
The castle is located in a strategic position to control the passage along the Piave river, between the hills of Susegana and Montello, and was of great importance in the Middle Ages, up to the 'donation' (or annexation) to the Venetian Republic.
The princes of Collalto, however, still retained a certain autonomy over the county until the fall of the Serenissima.
The Venetian republic was in fact a strongly federal state, with very wide concessions, with its own statutes, to Communities, Counties, Rules and Cities, especially those towards the borders.
