When people hear the name Puttgarden, they immediately think of the huge ferry port on the Vogelfluglinie (Vogelfluglinie). But the town of Puttgarden, first mentioned in 1198, has much more to offer and is ideal for hiking or cycling tours along the northern coast of Fehmarn.

Puttgarden is a town in the north of the island of Fehmarn and has been one of the town's districts since its founding. Puttgarden became known primarily as the location of the Puttgarden ferry port along the Vogelfluglinie (Vogelfluglinie).

The name Puttgarden presumably means "Under the Castle"; derived from the Old Slavic pod for "under" and gard for "castle." With the Peter and Paul Chapel, first documented in 1198, the Puttgarden district boasted the first place of worship on the island of Fehmarn. The chapel was destroyed by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War in 1644.

The names "Kapellenkuhl" and "Landwiese" (Landmeadow), where the horses of worshippers grazed, are reminiscent of the chapel.
The former municipality of Puttgarden was incorporated into the municipality of Bannesdorf on April 1, 1937, and merged with it into the town of Fehmarn on January 1, 2003.

In 1963, as part of the expansion of the Vogelfluglinie (Vogelflug Line), Puttgarden was connected to the Lübeck railway line and a modern ferry terminal east of the town was built, from which ferries have since operated to Rødbyhavn on the Danish island of Lolland.

From 2007 to 2013, Puttgarden served as an ICE station. Since December 2019, cross-border trains have run across the Great Belt. As a result, only hourly regional trains run from Puttgarden to Lübeck.

Also in 1963, Puttgarden reached the B 207, which merges into the A 1 motorway to the south.

Puttgarden is connected to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, which runs around the Baltic Sea as a European EuroVelo route.
