NATURE PARK First geopoint between Hornbach and Löhrbach / Tafel provides information

BIRKENAU - (red). The municipality of Birkenau has documented its first geopoint in the Unesco Bergstrasse-Odenwald nature park at the height of the “Stenges” between Hornbach and Löhrbach with an information board. The natural border path with a view of the Weschnitz valley and the Rhine plain is part of the certified OWK routes B7 and B9 and in ancient times served as the border between the warring electorates of Palatinate and Mainz.

Geopoints present scenic, geological and cultural-historical features in the municipalities of the nature park with information boards, the press release continues. Many of the historical traces are no longer recognizable to the layman. Generally understandable texts and illustrations should shed light on the history of the surrounding landscapes and their population.

The name "Wittelsbacher Grenzweg" refers primarily to the Hornbach district, the area of which was an independent bailiwick of the Electoral Palatinate, surrounded by boundary stones with carved rhombuses. The Electorate of Mainz in Löhrbach had the image of the Mainz wheel on its side. Because of the historical significance and the good degree of preservation of the more than 20 boundary stones from the refuge at Reisacker to the Dreimärker at the crossroads to Löhrbach, the entire route is designated as a cultural monument by the monument office in Hesse.

In 1746, the border was measured horizontally for the first time and noted on a map. All boundary stones are still at the original location today.
