Hans and Sophie Scholl, members of the student resistance group “Die Weiße Rose”, were executed in the neighboring Stadelheim prison on February 22nd, 1943 and are buried here in the Perlacher Forst cemetery. The grave was designed in 1992 by the well-known graphic designer Otl Aicher, the brother-in-law of Hans and Sophie Scholl. The memory of the White Rose is maintained, among other things, by decorating the tomb with white roses.

This strikingly well-maintained gravesite is surrounded on three sides by a protective hedge. Three crosses—unusually not evenly spaced, but two close together and the third considerably further apart—bear the names on their crossbeams: Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl, and Christoph Probst. The siblings Sophie and Hans are the most prominent—but by no means the only—members of a resistance movement during the Nazi regime. This group called itself the "White Rose," and so it should come as no surprise that visitors to the cemetery often place these flowers at their grave.
