In the footsteps of mining

The Harpener ponds - also called Werner ponds, are a combination of still waters, which are partly fed by the Harpen creek. This springs as Bövinghauser Bach in Dortmund and changes its name when overflowing the city boundary to Bochum. Located in the immediate vicinity of the hustle and bustle of the Ruhr-Park shopping center, the recreational potential of the Harpener ponds is surprising. Originally designed as a settlement oak of the Bochum mining industry, the ponds offer walkers, cyclists and joggers a little crowded oasis of tranquility. From this only the point of entry of the mine water of the coal mine Robert Müser stands out with loud noise and bubbling, which is responsible for the milky cloudiness and at times for unpleasant smell of sulfur by the mineral-containing water. Seating for a break are available. A wedding forest can also be found at the Harpener ponds. A network of trails opened from the west, south and north leads freely accessible through a special flora and fauna.

Before the rainwater collects deep underground, it has passed through several mineral-containing rock layers. Therefore, the mine water is not only salt but also sulfur-containing - the reason for the unpleasant, but harmless smell. The pumping out of mine water is one of the so-called eternity tasks of mining. 10 million cubic meters of mine water are extracted annually at this location alone. But since 2012, this method is no longer just a necessity. The mine water now produces environmentally friendly heat.
