The settlement name appears for the first time around 1150 as an oak marriage. Documents such as Aichakeirchen and Aichehechirchen date from around the same time, which indicates a settlement with a church. The name is originally derived from the Old High German word eihhahi for "oak forest". In order to avoid confusion with places of the same name, the addition vorm Wald was added from around 1720 as a reference to the location of the place near the Bavarian Forest.
