The lake is an abandoned quarry - created around 1920 by too much blasting, which caused a violent ingress of water.

A legend about the Goldbergsee says that this ingress of water must have been so fast that the quarry workers should even have let their beer crate down - just imagine the panic that must have been among the workers! Whether there is something about it or not, generations of divers have been looking for this beer crate - so far to no avail.

That is why the lake is relatively deep, despite its actually small size of approx. 100m in length and approx. 30m in width: 5 m at all times, up to 7-8 m at the deepest points. And that's also the explanation for the steep cliffs that almost completely surround the lake - except for the entrance area and a ladder at the opposite end.

The bathing lake offers a depth of nine to ten meters with a water surface of 60 by 140 meters.
