The Emscher is an 83.1 kilometer long river in the Ruhr area that rises in Dortmund and flows into the Rhine. Historically known as "Köttelbecke", it became heavily polluted due to intensive industrial use and the discharge of wastewater. However, an extensive restoration project has helped free the river from its concrete corsets and partially restore it to its natural loops and curves. The Emschertal, the landscape around the river, is an important natural area that is characterized by its lowlands and edge plates.
