The Khor Wirap Monastery is located in Ararat Province. It is the most famous holy place because it is associated with the adoption of Christianity in Armenia. Christianity was recognized as the state religion in Armenia in 301 by Gregory the Illuminator (the first Catholicos of the Armenians) by the Armenian King Trdat 3rd. Only after a 13-year incarceration in a deep pit did Gregory manage to convert King Trdat 3. The 17th century monastery complex offers a beautiful view of the biblical Mount Ararat.
