Written sources do not provide any definitive information about the founding of the monastery in Schlüchtern, but architectural criteria offer clear clues to the time of its establishment. The Carolingian floor plan of the monastery church suggests it was founded before 800. The founding itself is attributed to Saint Burkhard, who later became the first Bishop of Würzburg. In the early Carolingian and perhaps also the Ottonian period before Otto III, Schlüchtern Monastery developed the image of a small abbey of local importance. At the heart of monastic life was the observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict. As long as Schlüchtern was part of the empire, its function consisted essentially of prayers for the king, his family, and the empire. In 993, King Otto III confirmed Schlüchtern Monastery as a gift to the Diocese of Würzburg and Bishop Berward of Würzburg in a charter; This begins the history of the Benedictine monastery of Schlüchtern as a private monastery of Würzburg. The Reformation also left its mark on Schlüchtern. In 1534, Petrus Lotichius (1501-1567) became abbot of Schlüchtern. Under Petrus Lotichius, monastic life in Schlüchtern was reformed. In 1540, he founded a Latin school, laying the foundation for the school town of Schlüchtern. After his death, the Counts of Hanau, Reformed Calvinists, took over the monastery. They ordered an iconoclasm in 1592, in which numerous art treasures from Schlüchern Abbey were lost. At this time, the monastic community was seriously threatened with collapse. Today, the monastery is owned by the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck. It houses the Ulrich von Hutten Gymnasium and the church music training center of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck.
