In the 18th century, the village of Santo António de Arenilha was swallowed by the sea and sand. Vila Real de Santo António was then built: it was important to control the entry of goods through the Guadiana, to place Monte Gordo's fisheries under royal control and to confront Spain, with whom Portugal was at war in 1762/1763. The reconstruction of Vila Real de Santo António was inspired by that of Lisbon, after the 1755 earthquake.

This building used to house the administrative and judicial headquarters, the men's and women's prison, the stables, the government house, the granary and a public market.
Unfortunately, a fire in 1908 destroyed the building and it had to be rebuilt in a project that lasted more than four years.
What we have today is the result of a remodeling carried out in 2009.
