The column commemorates the departure of William, Duke of Normandy, at the Battle of Hastings.
In 1861, Arcisse de Caumont inaugurated it in the property of Count Foucher de Careil. In August 1966, the 900th anniversary of the departure, the column was transferred here, to the beach.
The Battle took place because the King of England, Edward the Confessor, died without an heir on January 5, 1066. Harold had himself crowned King of England even though William had been appointed by the king.
To recover the Crown, William prepared the attack from the port of Beuzeval-Dives by constituting an army of 8,000 men. After long months of preparations, the fleet of 1,400 ships set sail on September 12, but the men did not disembark at Pevensey until September 29, 1066 due to weather problems. During the battle on October 14, Harold was mortally wounded. After the submission of the English lords, William was crowned king of England on December 25, 1066.
