When Samson (495-565), a Welsh monk, came to Brittany at the beginning of the 6th century, he founded several monasteries, including in Dol, which became the episcopal see from 555. In the 9th century Nominoë, the Comte de Vannes, was recognized by Charles the Bald as "ducatus ipsius gentis" of the Bretons and crowned in Dol. Since then, the city has long been known as the "capital of Brittany".
Fame and significance are today's past. The historic buildings in the center of the town bear witness to this, especially the preserved medieval merchant and artisan houses in the Grande Rue des Stuarts and, of course, the mighty cathedral, whose name is Samson.
Six days a week, Dol is a quiet little town, only on Saturdays, on the day of the weekly market, there is something going on here.
