Beautiful, old arch bridge over the Lahn, from which you have a great view of the castle and Runkel. Right next door there is an ice cream parlor, where you can eat a delicious ice cream.

Visually a journey into the Middle Ages with the castle and the old stone bridge over the Lahn. I can highly recommend the ice cream parlor on the Lahn and the opposite bathing island. Here everyone has the fantastic opportunity in the beautiful Lahn, under supervision of the DLRG, to go swimming and relax on the sunbathing lawn. For us one of the top 10 places for hiking and cycling on the Lahn.

Runkel is located in the Lahn valley between the Westerwald and Taunus. Runkel was first mentioned in a document in 1259. Runkel Castle is outstanding. A knight of Charlemagne is said to have decided to build a castle in 787. The castle was built to secure the Lahn crossing and has been expanded several times.

From the eastern side of the Lahn bridge one has a picture book view of the Bug Runkel. But watch out, the old bridge is narrow - drivers and tourists taking photos sometimes get in the way here 😀

The bridge was built around 1440 by Dietrich IV von Runkel and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn. It replaced an older wooden bridge and probably had three bridge houses: one on each side of the bridge and another in the middle. At the beginning of the 19th century only the one in the middle of the bridge was left of these bridge houses. This collapsed in 1826 and was never rebuilt.

Runkel has one of the most impressive and largest castle ruins in Hesse. For generations, the Lords of Runkel were busy collecting tolls on the bridge, but also with family disputes and the occasional expansion of their castle. Runkel was the center of the Upper County of Wied and thus a small princely residence.
The coat of arms of the Lords of Runkel may remind visitors a little of a western under the Stars and Stripes: It looks quite American (but is older than the United States).
