A striking anecdote about the King Albert I monument in Nieuwpoort concerns the unveiling of the monument on 24 July 1938. Prominent members of the Belgian royal family were present during this ceremony, including King Leopold III, Queen Elisabeth, Prince Charles, Prince Baudouin and Princess Josephine-Charlotte.
A special moment was when King Leopold III, the son of King Albert I, officially unveiled the monument. This was an emotional and symbolic gesture, as the monument honours both his father and the Belgian troops during the First World War.
