In the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park is the Fargno Refuge, at 1820 meters above sea level, located on the Forcella del Fargno. A mountain environment, part of the municipality of Ussita, which includes a vast plant but also animal biodiversity. Depending on the time of year in which you happen to be in the refuge, it is possible to come across plant species characteristic of the area, from anemones to wild orchids and crocuses, and in animals peculiar to the place such as wolves, Apennine chamois and eagles.
The rustic style of the structure, recently renovated, follows the typical soul of the mountain: in fact, since the refuge is disconnected from the common city supply networks, it is maintained by relying on its own internal resources, in full respect of the environment and nature . The shape of the refuge is octagonal, designed to resist the strong winds that characterize the Fargno fork. Considering the heavy snowfalls that make the roads difficult to pass on, the structure, equipped with comfortable beds, is functional only a few months a year, from 1st May to 31st October, provided that the weather conditions make it possible. The refuge can be reached via two roads with a gravel road surface: passing through Casali di Ussita for about 13 km, or taking a shorter but more bumpy road of about 6 km which starts from Pintura di Bolognola (MC) .
The Fargno refuge is a favorite destination for bikers and motorcyclists to enjoy the wonderful panoramas that can be admired from here, but also to take a break and consume the excellent meals prepared with high quality ingredients inside the structure. From the refuge you can go on excursions to peaks and promontories more than two thousand meters above sea level, from Monte Priora (or Pizzo della Regina, 2332m), to Pizzo Tre Vescovi (2092m) or Pizzo Berro (2260m), with breathtaking scenery ranging from Monte Vettore to Monte Rotondo and beyond: on days with clear and serene skies, the gaze can stretch as far as the Majella, the Gran Sasso and even the Adriatic Sea.
