The bridge and the associated Staigstrasse is an early form of bypass and was originally intended for rapid troop movements. Through them, the traffic in the Pfinztal above the church in the center of the village was diverted. The function is now taken over by the Grötzinger Tunnel.
Explanation at the bridge:
“Up until 1875, all traffic in the Pfinztal was via the Staig. The bridge was built by Margrave Ludwig at the request of Margravine Augusta in 1706. "
Margrave Ludwig is Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden of the margraviate of Baden-Baden. The Margravine Augusta is Margravine Augusta Maria von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (1649-1728), who had owned the adjacent Augustenburg Castle since 1678 and lived there from 1709 to 1718.
"Already during the war (War of the Palatinate Succession) the soldiers of Baden-Baden's Margrave Ludwig began to lay out the Grötzinger Staige."
On April 5, 1945, the bridge was prepared for demolition to prevent the advance of the approaching French troops. The nearby evangelical church would have been in danger because of the demolition. Pastor Fuchs, however, managed to prevent the demolition. Other important bridges in the village had previously been blown up.
