The cathedral of Santa Maria de Episcopio overlooks the square of the same name, behind it is the archbishop's palace. It is the seat of the metropolitan archdiocese. Existing since the origins of the Benevento church, it was almost totally destroyed by Allied bombing in the Second World War, and subsequently rebuilt.
The cathedral of Benevento was originally built in the 7th century, but destroyed during the second world war, and then rebuilt. It was the first place of Christian worship in Benevento.
