Across the street from the Palace of Margaret of Austria you can see a last vestige of the Palace of Margaret of York. The building was originally the residence of the Bishop of Cambrai when he is in Mechelen. Margareta chooses the enormous Hof van Kamerijk as a widow's estate. It is also called Keizerhof, because Emperor Charles V resided here from 1500 to 1515. Just above the small door in the tower is her diamond-shaped coat of arms, next to that of her husband, Charles the Bold. The former reception hall of the palace is now the municipal theatre.

Margaret of York

Edward IV, King of England, marries his sister Margareta to Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. That's good, because he just became a widower. Eduard sees it in it too, because that way he has a rich ally against France. Karel has a daughter from his previous marriage: Mary of Burgundy is just eleven years old when Margareta becomes her stepmother. The two get along well.

Karel is killed on the battlefield and his daughter Maria succeeds him – nineteen, young and inexperienced. Maria is opposed to the self-confident, wealthy Flemish cities that are striving for more independence. She is assisted by Margaret of York with advice and assistance, but that is a thorn in the side of the cities. Margareta is forced to leave the court and settles on her widow's estate in Mechelen.
