The climb can be started from Mechelen or from Mamelis. From the roundabout on the main road between Gulpen and Vaals, it first goes up a cycle path along a wide road towards Vijlen, where it flattens out for a while. In Vijlen, there is a water tap opposite the church; very handy.
Where the bend goes left, turn right into the Rugweg; here it is a bit steeper, but once you are in the forest it is wonderfully cool to pedal to the top.
One of the longest climbs that can be made in the Netherlands.
