Fight against the water

For centuries peat was extracted in the low peat area between Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden. This created peat pools that grew into large lakes due to storms. Eventually five lakes merged to form the Haarlemmermeer, the largest inland lake in the Netherlands. The lake was popularly referred to as the Waterwolf, as it took bigger and bigger bites from the surrounding land and even wiped out entire villages.

One of the first planners for the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer was Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater (1575-1650). Many have followed him over the course of some 200 years. All these plans met with resistance from the major cities. Leiden wanted to hold on to its fishing rights and Haarlem earned a lot from shipping. The water from the Haarlemmermeer was also used to flush the canals in the cities. Ultimately, the threat of flooding from Amsterdam and Leiden in 1836 was the moment for King William I to decide to reclaim the Haarlemmermeer.

Machine and people

In 1840, the first sod went into the ground at Hillegom for the digging of the ring canal. They worked hard for eight years on the construction of the ring dike and the ring canal around the Haarlemmermeer. Thousands of navigators had to use shovels and wheelbarrows to make the almost 63 kilometer long ring dike. The workers slept in thatched and straw huts. After completion of the dike, the reclamation of the lake could start with the steam engines. Grease boys, porters, stokers and machinists were needed to operate the pumping stations. Experienced machinists, sub-engineers and stokers were recruited from England.
