      The moated castle was built in 1632. In late Frankish times, in a document dated June 4, 898, the king of the Lotharingian kingdom, Zwentibold, donated a farm in Gleuel (Gloulo), along with 12 other acres and the church, to the Essen Abbey. Gerard von Gluele, from whom the castle and town take their name, is known as the owner from 1260. Since 1976, the castle has belonged to an architect who lives there and also runs a vintage car museum.

      However, the current lord of the castle opens the property to the public for cultural events.

      In the main building, the Cologne ceiling in the Knights' Hall, featuring the coats of arms of the Cölln and Mülheim families from 1685, is worth seeing. Concerts are occasionally held here. Also worth seeing is the library with its English sandstone fireplace.
