In 1474, the construction of the abbey church of the imperial Benedictine monastery began as a brick building and was completed in 1500 by Burkhard Engelberg, the builder of the Ulm Minster tower. Emperor Maximilian I laid the foundation stone for the choir building of the collegiate church in 1500. Because of the religious disputes in the 16th century, the construction work was not completed until 1603/04. When the Augsburg churches were divided after the Thirty Years' War, the twin structure of the Catholic and Protestant churches was created.
The Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra is one of the last large late Gothic church buildings in Swabia. The tower dome with its typical "onion towers" became a model for baroque churches in Bavaria. The valuable interior furnishings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods form a harmonious ensemble with the building.

An impressive church. The Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra is Catholic and right in front of it is the Evangelical St. Ulrich's Church. I call that ecumenism.
