From the once mighty castle today only a few remains of the wall and the renovated keep are preserved. The castle association Thanstein, which takes care of the preservation of the castle, also runs a rustic Burgschänke directly at the castle tower.

The nobility of the Thansteiner was first mentioned in a document in 1218 with a Uto of Tannstein, however, was their former headquarters, the castle Altenthanstein, about 2000 meters west on the so-called Old Thanstein on Dautersdorf, he is now preserved only as a stable. The "New" Castle in Thanstein was built in the early 14th century by the ministerial family, and then served as their ancestral castle.
In 1353, the castle passed to a branch of the Zengerian family and later, through the marriage of Margaret Zenger and Knight Georg von Ebleben, came to the Lords of Ebleben.
In 1811, the entire castle burned down to the keep, it was restored in 1887, and today is the landmark of the place. From the former castle, the circular keep and some, partially covered remains of the wall have been preserved.
