The tower was commissioned around 1550 by the Appiani family of Piombino, who ruled parts of Elba.

It served to protect the coastal inhabitants from Saracen pirate raids, which were frequent during this period. As on Mallorca, it was part of a network of towers that sounded the alarm with signal fires when pirates were seen.

The circular floor plan is typical of Renaissance defenses (from the 15th/16th centuries onwards), as they were better able to ward off cannonballs.

Unfortunately, it cannot be climbed, but it makes a beautiful postcard motif.

The Tower of Marciana Marina dates back to the 12th century and represents Marciana Marina during this period, which was subject to Pisan rule. Its origins suggest that it was built during the Medici era, although its configuration suggests that it was built during the Medici era. In the Battle of Meloria, which took place in 1284, the Pisans suffered a heavy defeat and, in addition to losing their possessions, lost their autonomy. During the same period, the Appiano family, lords of Piombino, took possession of Marciana Marina. For many years, it was the residence of the Marinese writer Raffaello Brignetti. The tower's interior cannot be visited as it is privately owned.
