The church in Breitenbach was once dedicated to St. Michael. The choice of this patron saint suggests that it was built very early. It was probably built in the 12th century at the latest, possibly as early as the time of Boniface and his students. It is one of the oldest churches in Hesse.
It is first mentioned in a document in 1508. A small predecessor church probably stood on the site of today's large church.
The Breitenbach church tower was built around the year 1500 from sandstone. It therefore comes from the Gothic period. Originally the tower was pointed and high and surrounded by four corner turrets.
The tower is divided into three floors. The portal on the west side is framed by two bars that cross each other at the corners and in a pointed arch. The floor of the basement consisted of old gravestones that were removed during the renovation in 1967/68. Late Gothic, two-part tracery windows are installed on the upper floor, which are now partially covered by the church clocks.
