Digging the Schipdonk Canal together with the Leopold Canal was one of the first major infrastructure works in young Belgium.
The north-south orientation of the canal between Eeklo and Deinze played an important strategic role in both world wars. During the German retreat at the end of the First World War in October 1918, there were heavy battles along the canal, including near Ronsele. Heavy fighting took place around Zomergem during the Second World War, May-May 1940. On May 26, the first Germans crossed the canal. Vinkt (Vinkt Bloedbad) and Meimem on the canal also suffered badly at the time. When the Germans left in September 1944, another heavy blow was carried out, this time with Canadian troops in Balgerhoeke (Maldegem - Adegem).

The Leopold Canal was built between 1847 and 1850. It runs about 40 km west of Boekhoute to Heist-aan-Zee. It is between 1.2 and 2.3 m (3 ft 11 in and 7 ft 7 in) deep. The canal was proposed by Canon Joseph Andries, a local member of the Belgian National Congress, to prevent the Dutch from blocking the water drain and flooding Meetjesland after Belgium's independence from the Netherlands. It is claimed that 360 km² of arable land has been removed.
This channel was a main line of German resistance during the Battle of the Scheldt in World War II.
