The Roman Catholic cross basilica of Peter and Paul is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as a representative of the boom in Roman Catholic church building in the Neo-Gothic style after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853. The church is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as an example of Neo-Gothic inspired by early French Gothic, in which style characteristics from Romanesque architecture are still clearly present; as a representative example from the church oeuvre of the architect E.J. Margaret; due to the reasonable degree of intactness in main form, detailing and use of materials of the exterior and interior; because of the art-historical value of some interior parts. The church is of great urban importance because of its very iconic location near the lock within the village view of Leidschendam.
