Junagrah Fort is a historic fort and one of the most impressive forts in Rajasthan. Junagarh Fort and its palaces were built between 1588-1593 by Raja Raj Singh, a general in the army of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The fort has remained undefeated to this day. The fortress has a wall 96 meters long and inside it contains 37 palaces, temples and pavilions. The 37 bastions of the fortress guard it and only two gates allow access inside the fortress. The main entrance to the fort is called the Suraj Pol or Sun Gate. The palaces are built of exquisite red sandstone and marble and decorated with mirror work, carvings and paintings. The palaces contain exquisitely carved window decorations, balconies, towers and small rooms. The interiors contain lacquered furniture, mirrorwork, murals, goldwork, enamels, shell finishes and lime plaster.
