There are numerous commemorative steles like this one along the Chemin des Dames. As part of the Nivelle Offensive in 1917, a notorious Moroccan division fought on the French side, which was nicknamed "Death Swallows" in the German ranks. The murderous losses in these places can hardly be guessed at, stopping at these steles may create some awareness, but for the most part, mindfulness is required when driving.
