Today, most people associate the Gate of Dawn with a house of prayer. However, a few centuries ago, when the people of Vilnius heard the name Aušra Varta, they would have thought first of the defensive wall of the city. At that time, the defensive wall of the city of Vilnius had ten gates, and the Dawn Gate is the only one that has survived out of those ten. The defensive function of the structure is also reminded of the shooting holes still visible on the outer side of the gate.
The miraculous painting of the Mother of Mercy of the Blessed Virgin Mary hanging in the Dawn Gate Chapel is one of the most famous works of Renaissance painting in Lithuania. It is also called the Madonna of the Dawn Gate or the Madonna of Vilnius. The picture was painted especially for this chapel in the 17th century based on the example of the Dutch artist Martin de Vos.
Catholics, Orthodox, and Unitarians (that is, Catholics of the Greek Rite) worshiped and considered the painting miraculous. It is known all over the world, copies of it are kept in churches of many countries, for example in Paris - Saint Severin Church, d
