When Margrave Waldemar named the town of Potzlow a market town in 1305, a first stone Roland was erected as a symbol of market rights. The neighboring town of Prenzlau, as the owner of the previously sole market rights, is said to have disagreed with the situation because from then on it had to share the market rights with Potzlow. In a night-and-fog operation, she is said to have removed the stone Roland from Potzlow. In 1871 remains of a stone Roland were found during excavations near Potzlow, which confirmed this. The Potzlower built a new Roland in 1727. It consisted of a simple block of spruce wood with two arms and a roughly outlined head. In 1898 the wooden roland was restored due to rot damage and placed on a stone base. In 1991 the city administration replaced the old Roland with a new statue, which is now on the market square. Compared to the old version, he now stretches one arm out and holds a market sword in the other hand.
The old wooden Roland now stands in the tower of Potzlow Church.
