The memorial is a sign of Franco-German friendship and commemorates the "First Grenadier of France" (honored by Napoleon during his lifetime), La Tour d'Auvergne, who fell here on June 27, 1800 in the war between France and Bavaria and Austria. The monument and at the same time the tomb for La Tour and Colonel Forty, who fell with him, was erected here in its original form on September 20, 1800, on a 300 square meter property that still belongs to France today. Emperor Napoleon visited the memorial and tomb in 1809 and honored La Tour once more. The monument has been renovated several times and has had its current form since 1837. The inscriptions are dedicated to La Tour and Colonel Forty. As a hero of the republic, La Tour was exhumed in 1889 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, against the will of his descendants, and transferred to the Pantheon in Paris.
Nevertheless, the monument is always the scene of international visits and celebrations. La Tour and his first resting place in Oberhausen are also commemorated in his home town of Carhaix. A street there bears the name of Oberhausen. Oberhausen residents also regularly take part in an annual parade in honor of La Tours.

The Latour monument stands on a hill near Oberhausen.
The memorial was erected by Napoleon Bonaparte in honor of the French soldier Theophile Malo Corret Latour d'Auvergne who died nearby.
By order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, the monument was renovated in 1837 and given its current form.
The land on which the monument is located became the property of the French state when it was purchased in 1800.

On the hill between Oberhausen and Unterhausen stands the memorial for the French soldier Theophile Malo Corret Latour d'Auvergne, who died in a battle here on June 27, 1800. Napoleon Bonaparte awarded him the honorary title "First Grenadier of the Armies of the Republic" and an honorary saber. In an order of the day dated July 1, 1800, the commander-in-chief of the French troops, General Moreau, ordered the erection of a memorial. In 1837 the monument was given its current form during a renovation by order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The land on which the monument is located has been owned by the French state since 1800 by purchase.
